Renowned architect, Hafeez Contractor visited the college on the 27th of Feb 2016. He interacted with student and addressed the students and faculty members through the day.
Hafeezs’ footprints are indelibly stamped across India’s built environment today. He has shaped and changed the urban built landscape of the country through his provocative and unpredictably revolutionary ideas. His practice has dedication to design excellence, efficient and quick delivery and sophistication in building technology as its hallmarks.
He inspired our students through his brilliant work and thought-provoking presentation. The students were immensely benefitted through the candid interactions.
Earlier in the day, he addressed professional architects on the theme of Smart Development and interacted with students in the Design Studio. He also extended an open invitation to our students for weekend intensive Design sessions in groups of 20 – 25 in his office at Mumbai. Elated students have proposed to have the first of such a session in July this year.
It was also decided to institute an award, namely, ‘ The Hafeez Contractor Award for Excellence in Architectural Design’ in the honour of this Great Master from 2016 onwards. The award is to be given every year to the best Final Year Thesis Project, to be chosen by him, from the top 3 projects in the class. The award would carry a citation and a cash award of Rs 50,000/-.
Hafeez Contractor gave away prizes to meritorious students and lauded their efforts. The students also presented memorabilia in the form of line art, water colour sketches and pencil sketches depicting him.
Hafeez is recipient of numerous awards and honours for excellence in design and contribution to architecture; including CWAB Architect of the Year 2006 to 2015, A+D Hall of fame for the decade Award, 4 times featured in WA 100 Architects of the world List as Top Indian Architect, Thrice in AD Top 50 and twice has been included in Most Powerful Indians List by India Today, amongst others. Hafeez is conferred honorary doctorates by Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University- Hyderabad in 2012 and Rai University- Ahmedabad in 2014. In the same year Hafeez was also covered by New York Times in a cover story title “The Man who draws India”. Hafeez Contractor was conferred with the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian honour earlier this year.
